What Types of EVs are Eligible for Support?

 

SEAI will check each type of vehicle meets the following sets of criteria before allowing that vehicle type to become eligible for grant support.

Only Passenger of Light Commercial Vehicles (must be a derivative of a Passenger type) which have achieved EU Whole Vehicle Type Approval are eligible for this scheme. The formal definitions for those categories of vehicles as they apply to this scheme are as follows:

Passenger Vehicle M1

  • Motor vehicle with four wheels for the carriage of passengers with no more than 8 seats in addition to the driver’s seat

Light Commercial Vehicle N1 (only those not exceeding 2.5 tonnes are eligible)

  • The EU definition for an N1 vehicle is a vehicle with four wheels designed for the carriage of goods and not exceeding a maximum mass of 3.5 tonnes
  • Only N1 vehicles not exceeding 2.5 tonnes maximum mass are eligible for this Grant Scheme as it is intended to support passenger car derivative scale light commercial vehicles only

The following criteria apply equally to both M1 and N1 vehicles.

Battery Electric EVs

  • Range exceeding 100km
  • Top speed exceeding 100kph
  • Vehicle Warranty 3 years or 100,000km
  • Tail pipe emission of 0 gCO2/km
  • Euro NCAP Star Rating of at least 3

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV)

  • All electric range exceeding 20km
  • Top speed exceeding 100kph
  • Vehicle Warranty 3 years or 100,000km
  • Tail pipe emission less than 75 gCO2/km
  • Euro NCAP Star Rating of at least 3
