Top marks for Teachers' Summer Course

26 teachers completed our summer course "Teaching Science through inquiry", run in partnership with Discover Primary Science and Maths from 1st to 7th July at Airfield Estate, Dublin. Not only did teachers learn a lot they also thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

"The hands-on workshops were great. I found the whole course very beneficial" Maire Ui Loingsigh, St Joseph's BNS, Terenure, Dublin.

Pictured (above) are teachers racing their land yachts, one of the hands-on design and make activities they did during the week which helped them understand the concept of wind energy. To the left are teachers testing their solar ovens.

On day 3, teachers were given a tour of the beautiful Airfield Estate. In glorious sunshine they went hunting in the hedgerows and pond dipping (below). Eoin, the education guide then demonstrated the sustainable aspects of Airfield: solar panels for heating water, rainwater collectors, reed beds and green rooves. Teachers also got to hear about the story of food, from field to fork - and then to taste it in the restaurant!

Feedback from the teachers showed that the most valuable elements of the course were hands-on and practical experiments, demonstrations, online resources and website.

"In my role as Green-Schools Co-ordinator I found this course immensely helpful" Noreen McDonnell, Scoil Mhuire, Ballyboden, Dublin.

A few teachers asked for more time outdoors, so let's hope for good weather again next year!

DPSM and SEAI would like to acknowledge the help and support provided by Blackrock Education Centre in organising this course.
