Emerging Standards

What is ISO 50002?

ISO 50002 Energy Audits is an International Standard which has been designed to complement ISO 50001.   It addresses principles of an energy audit including confidentiality, transparency, and the audit process. It includes a series of annexes that addresses different types of audits for industry, buildings, transportation and services. Audits include essential information on current energy use and performance and recommendations for improvements in a wide range of areas, including operational controls, maintenance controls, modifications and capital projects.  The new standard sets down the basic principles and requirements for carrying out energy audits and harmonizing common auditing processes. Additionally, this common approach allows organizations to compare results across similar sites.

Other Emerging Standards

  • ISO 50003 EnMS Conformity Assessments:  concentrates on requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of energy management systems.  It provides guidance on the conformity assessment of the Energy Management System (EnMS), which is a crucial part of successful conformance with ISO 50001. The document specifies the elements in the auditing process and competence requirements of personnel involved in the audit. This includes the audit plan, audit team selection, audit time and audit report.

  • ISO 50004 EnMS Guidance:  provides guidance for the implementation, maintenance and improvement of an energy management system.  It  encompasses a wide variety of topics including determining the scope of an EnMS, management responsibility, identifying significant energy uses, prioritizing improvement opportunities, competence of personnel, communication, documentation, procurement, monitoring, conducting internal audits, non-conformity, corrective action and management evaluation the EnMS.

  • ISO 50006Energy Baseline & EnPI’s:  provides guidance on measuring energy performance using energy baselines (EnB) and energy performance indicators (EnPI).

  • ISO 50015 M&V Guidance & Principles: provides guidelines on the measurement and verification of energy performance in organizations.  ISO 50015:2014 establishes general principles and guidelines for the process of measurement and verification (M&V) of energy performance of an organization or its components. It can be used independently, or in conjunction with other standards or protocols, and can be applied to all types of energy.
