Energy Efficient Design

Overview

Energy Efficient Design (EED) is a methodology that assists organisations to design, construct and manage projects to achieve minimum energy consumption.

This approach can help Public Sector bodies to future-proof projects now being considered, as part of their 2020 Energy Reduction commitments.

Energy Efficient Design can minimise energy usage and reduce the running costs of a building or process. It can also help reduce the capital cost of the project through design changes.

The Energy Efficient Design Process helps identify savings atall project stages, but the sooner that EED is commenced, the greater the potential for operational and capital savings.

Energy Efficient Design Process:

Estimate Energy Baseline based on available information to establish the running costs of the plant over its lifetime and the main energy usage areas within the plant. This provides a focus for the review and helps to quantify the savings initiatives proposed.

Analyse the Plant Design, Identify Alternative Processes/ Technologies or Optimise Energy Performance of Existing Processes. This normally takes the form of a 1-day workshop attended by the Public Sector Body, Project Design Consultants and an Energy Efficient Design Expert, followed by a report with the main savings estimated.

Implementation consists of ensuring:

(a) that identified EED initiatives make it into final tender documents, are installed and commissioned correctly, and

(b) that savings due to EED are quantified.
