Significant savings have been achieved by the Naval Service in what is a very harsh and demanding operational environment.
Approximately 90% of the organisation’s energy use is as a result of ship movements. The Navy must balance energy use with legal and operations requirements.
Savings of €5 million and more than 20,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide have been made over the past five years.
This project highlights that savings can be achieved in difficult operational areas as well as in buildings and facilities. The judges were impressed with the overall strategy and programme of activities which is largely based on and driven by the ISO 50001 standard.
