Medtronic Parkmore implements energy saving and decarbonisation projects
The Galway facility has embarked on several energy saving and decarbonisation projects after initiating Corporate Sustainability Goals.
Background
Medtronic is a global Healthcare solutions provider which, as per the Medtronic Mission, contributes to the well-being of people through the application of biomedical technologies in the research, development, manufacture and sale of instruments or devices that help alleviate pain, restore health, and extend life. Their diverse global team of more than 95,000 people help to transform the lives of two people every second.
Medtronic (Galway) is a member of SEAI’s Large Industry Energy Network (LIEN) since 2019. LIEN is a network of ~200 large companies who the SEAI support in improving their energy performance and reducing emissions. Assistance is provided to LIEN members through free expert advice, training, briefings and special working groups. LIEN member companies collaborate and learn from each other and all work towards energy savings and emissions reductions in line with national industry targets.
Project summary
Medtronic is dedicated to improving our global environment. To help achieve the company’s sustainability vision, Medtronic initiated Corporate Sustainability Goals; demonstrated in the sustainability roadmap goals:
- Reduce Energy Intensity by 20% by 2025 (FY25 – May 2024 to Apr 2025)
- Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions Intensity by 50% by 2025
- Increase energy sourced from renewable and alternative sources by 50% by 2025
- Carbon Neutral in Global Operations by 2030
- Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2045
In 2023, the Medtronic Parkmore Facilities Energy Management Team, recognising the challenge of achieving global sustainability goals, decided to implement a suite of major initiatives which would ensure a meaningful positive change to sustainability.
- Electrified Heat Pump Conversion
- LED Replacement
- Solar PV-cell Array Installation
- Installation of energy efficient equipment and smart controls
Project grant aid: Medtronic Parkmore received financial support for this project from Enterprise Ireland under the Environmental Aid Scheme. Upon completion of measurement and verification (M&V), the facility also hopes to receive support from an energy supplier through the Energy Efficiency Obligation Scheme (EEOS).
Project outcomes
Energy Reduction: Approx. 20% Reduction (6100 MWhrs p.a)
Carbon Emission (Scope 1) Reduction: approx. 2300 t/co2 p.a
Through the savings achieved in these projects, the Medtronic Parkmore campus has performed as follows against Medtronic Corporate Goals:
- Reduce Energy Intensity by 20% by 2025– Achieved 2 years early
- Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions Intensity by 50% by 2025 – Achieved 2 years early
- Increase energy sourced from renewable and alternative sources by 50% by 2025 – Achieved 2 years early
- Carbon Neutral in Global Operations by 2030 – 3% Remaining with 7 years to target date
Future plans
The completion of these projects has removed approximately 97% of their scope 1 carbon emissions on campus – the next target is to remove the remainder with future projects under review including, further Solar PV installation, incorporation of HVO and Biogas as alternative fuels as well as further electrification of carbon emitters on site.
