Final energy consumption describes the energy that is directly consumed by an end-user. SEAI analyses final energy consumption in transport by energy product, energy sub-product and by sub-sector.

Final Energy Consumption in Transport

Yearly Change

The data view below shows the annual final energy consumption in the transport sector (top), along with the absolute and percentage differences of transport final energy consumption, with respect to the previous year for up to 20 years, where data is available (bottom).

Breakdown by Sub-Sector

The data view below shows the annual final energy consumption in the transport sector (top), along with the transport sub-sectoral breakdown displayed as a percentage of the transport final consumption in a given year (bottom). The energy use of light goods vehicles (LGV) is estimated from 2008 onwards. Prior to 2008, the energy use of this sub-sector was included in the 'unspecified' category.

Breakdown by Energy Product

The data view below shows the annual final energy consumption in the transport sector (top), along with the energy product breakdown displayed as a percentage of the transport final consumption in a given year (bottom).

Breakdown by Energy Sub-Product

The data view below shows the annual final energy consumption in the transport sector (top), along with the energy sub-product breakdown displayed as a percentage of the transport final consumption in a given year (bottom).

Final Energy Consumption "on the Road"

Yearly Change

The data view below shows the annual final energy consumption of oil, electricity and renewables on the road (top), along with the absolute and percentage differences in road transport final energy consumption, with respect to the previous year for up to 20 years, where data is available (bottom).

Breakdown by Sub-Sector

The data view below shows the annual final energy consumption of oil, electricity and renewables on the road (top), along with the road transport sub-sectoral breakdown displayed as a percentage of the total final consumption of oil, electricity and renewables in road transport in a given year (bottom). The energy use of light goods vehicles (LGV) is estimated from 2008 onwards. Prior to 2008, the energy use of this sub-sector was included in the 'unspecified' category.

Breakdown by Energy Sub-Product

The data view below shows the annual final energy consumption of oil, electricity and renewables on the road (top), along with the energy sub-product breakdown displayed as a percentage of the total final consumption of oil, electricity and renewables in road transport in a given year (bottom).

Final Energy Consumption in the Road Private Car Sub-Sector

Yearly Change

The data view below shows the annual final energy consumption in the road private car sub-sector (top), along with the absolute and percentage differences of road private car final energy consumption, with respect to the previous year for up to 20 years, where data is available (bottom).

Final Energy Consumption in the Aviation Sub-Sectors

Yearly Change

The data view below shows the annual final energy consumption in the domestic and international aviation sub-sectors (top), along with the absolute difference of total aviation final energy consumption, with respect to the previous year for up to 20 years, where data is available (bottom).

Using the Annual Data Views

The data views can be customised and navigated by:

  • Selecting the units from the dropdown menu - kilotonnes of oil equivalent (ktoe) (default), terajoules (TJ), or terawatt hours (TWh).
  • Hovering over an element of a view to display a tooltip providing numerical values.

The data in the views can be downloaded by clicking on the 'download icon' and selecting:

  • Image to download the view as a PNG file.
  • Data to open a table of the underlying data in Tableau Public Crosstab to download the underlying data as a XLSX file (Microsoft Excel) or a CSV file (comma-separated values).
  • PDF to download the view as a PDF.
  • PowerPoint to download the view as a PPTX file for Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Tableau Workbook to download all views as a TWBX file for Tableau Desktop.
