SEAI analyses data relevant to electricity by generation input energy product, sub-product, and renewable/non-renewable split, and the electricity energy product by stream and sector. Electricity produced from 'electricity exchange and transfers' is included in this section. This page refers to:
- Energy input to electricity generation (-)
- Electricity output from electricity generation (+)
- Interconnected electricity primary energy requirement
- Efficiency of electricity supply
- Electricity available final energy consumption
- Electricity final energy consumption
Activities that add energy to primary energy requirement or energy available for final consumption have been assigned positive values. Activities that remove energy from primary energy requirement or energy available for final consumption have been assigned negative values.
Total Input to Electricity Generation
Yearly Change
The data view below shows the annual energy input to electricity generation, summed across public thermal power plants (PTPP) input, combined heat and power plants (CHP) input, electricity exchange and transfers and net imports (top), along with the absolute and percentage differences of input to electricity generation, with respect to the previous year for up to 20 years, where data is available (bottom).
Breakdown by Energy Product
The data view below shows the annual energy input to electricity generation, summed across public thermal power plants (PTPP) input, combined heat and power plants (CHP) input, electricity exchange and transfers and net imports (top), along with the energy product breakdown displayed as a percentage of the total energy input to electricity generation in a given year (bottom).
Renewable/Non-Renewable Split
The data view below shows the annual energy input to electricity generation, summed across public thermal power plants (PTPP) input, combined heat and power plants (CHP) input, electricity exchange and transfers and net imports (top), along with the renewable/non-renewable breakdown (top) and the non-renewable/renewable energy sub-product breakdown (bottom). These are displayed as a percentage of the total energy input to electricity generation in a given year. This breakdown is not the basis of the RES-E calculation and does not include weightings, for example.
Total Energy Input to and Electricity Output from Electricity Generation
Breakdown by Stream
The data view below shows the total annual energy input to (top) and electricity output from (bottom) electricity generation (line), summed across all streams (bars): public thermal power plants (PTPP), combined heat and power plants (CHP), electricity exchange and transfers and net imports.
Total Energy Input to Renewable Electricity Generation

The data view below shows the annual energy input to renewable electricity generation, summed across public thermal power plants (PTPP) input, combined heat and power plants (CHP) input and electricity exchange and transfers (top), along with the absolute and percentage differences of input to renewable electricity generation, with respect to the previous year for up to 20 years, where data is available (bottom).
Breakdown by Energy Sub-Product
The data view below shows the annual energy input to renewable electricity generation, summed across public thermal power plants (PTPP) input, combined heat and power plants (CHP) input and electricity exchange and transfers, along with the energy sub-product breakdown displayed as a percentage of the total energy input to renewable electricity generation in a given year (bottom).

Primary Energy Requirement of Interconnected Electricity
The data view below shows the total annual import and export of interconnected electricity, displayed as absolute values (bars) and as net values (line).
Efficiency of Electricity Supply
The data view below shows the efficiency of electricity supply, expressed as a percentage over the last 21 years. Electricity supply efficiency calculations include energy consumed by electricity generating plants themselves, as well as transmission and distribution losses.
Total Electricity Available Final Consumption
Breakdown by Stream
The data view below shows the annual net total available final consumption of electricity (line), summed across all streams (bars): exports, imports, combined heat and power plants (input and output), oil refineries and other energy sector (input), public thermal power plants (input and output), pumped storage (input and output), electricity exchange and transfers, and own use and distribution losses.
Final Energy Consumption of Electricity
