Review data related to oil. Definitive annual data from SEAI's National Energy Balance.

Use the sidebar links to jump to specific data views on this page, or to learn more about how to interact with the annual data views.

SEAI analyses data relevant to oil by energy sub-product, stream and sector. This page refers to:

  • Oil primary energy requirement
  • Energy input to (-) and output from (+) oil refining
  • Oil available final energy consumption
  • Oil final energy consumption

Activities that add energy to primary energy requirement or energy available for final consumption have been assigned positive values. Activities that remove energy from primary energy requirement or energy available for final consumption have been assigned negative values.

Total Oil Primary Energy Requirement

Yearly Change

The data views below shows the annual net primary energy requirement of oil, summed across all relevant streams: imports, exports, marine bunkers and stock change (top), along with the absolute and percentage differences of oil primary energy requirement, with respect to the previous year for up to 20 years, where data is available (bottom).

Breakdown by Stream

The data view below shows the annual primary energy requirement of oil broken out by stream (bars), alongside the net value (line).

Breakdown by Energy Sub-Product

The data view below shows the annual primary energy requirement of oil, summed across all relevant streams: imports, exports, marine bunkers and stock change along with its energy sub-product breakdown (top). The energy sub-product breakdown is also displayed as a percentage of the oil primary energy requirement (bottom). Secondary sub-products can have negative values here as inter-product transfers describe the reclassification of products and are therefore reported as a negative value for one product, compensated by a positive value for another product.

Total Energy Input to/Output from Oil Refining

Breakdown by Energy Sub-Product

The data view below shows the annual energy product breakdown of the total energy input to and output from the oil refineries and other energy sector stream in a given year. Tailor the plot to show either/both input and output values.

Total Oil Available Final Consumption

Yearly Change

The data view below shows the annual net available final consumption of oil, summed across all relevant streams: exports, imports, marine bunkers, stock change, combined heat and power plants (input), oil refineries and other energy sector (input and output), public thermal power plants (input), other exchange and transfers and own use and distribution losses. Also shown are the absolute and percentage differences of net oil available final consumption, with respect to the previous year for up to 20 years, where data is available (bottom).

Breakdown by Stream

The data view below shows the annual net total available final consumption of oil (line), summed across all relevant streams (bars): exports, imports, marine bunkers, stock change, combined heat and power plants (input), oil refineries and other energy sector (input and output), public thermal power plants (input), other exchange and transfers and own use and distribution losses.

Oil Sub-Products Available Final Consumption

Diesel / Gas Oil - Yearly Change

The data view below shows the annual net available final consumption of diesel / gas oil, summed across all relevant streams: exports, imports, marine bunkers, stock change, combined heat and power plants (input), oil refineries and other energy sector (input and output), public thermal power plants (input), other exchange and transfers and own use and distribution losses (top). Also shown are the absolute and percentage differences of net diesel / gas oil available final consumption, with respect to the previous year for up to 20 years, where data is available (bottom).

Gasoline - Yearly Change

The data view below shows the annual net available final consumption of gasoline, summed across all relevant streams: exports, imports, stock change, oil refineries and other energy sector (output) and other exchange and transfers (top). Also shown are the absolute and percentage differences of net gasoline available final consumption, with respect to the previous year for up to 20 years, where data is available (bottom).

Gasoline - Breakdown by Stream

The data view below shows the annual net total available final consumption of gasoline (line), summed across all relevant streams (bars): exports, imports, stock change, oil refineries and other energy sector (output) and other exchange and transfers.

Kerosene - Yearly Change

The data view below shows the annual net available final consumption of kerosene, summed across all relevant streams: exports, imports, stock change, oil refineries and other energy sector (output) and other exchange and transfers (top). Also shown are the absolute and percentage differences of net gasoline available final consumption, with respect to the previous year for up to 20 years, where data is available (bottom).

Kerosene - Breakdown by Stream

The data view below shows the annual net total available final consumption of kerosene (line), summed across all relevant streams (bars): exports, imports, stock change, oil refineries and other energy sector (output) and other exchange and transfers. As some of the kerosene used in Ireland is 'dual purpose kerosene', which can be used as either aviation fuel or heating fuel. Consequently, there are significant quantities of 'exchanges and transfers' between kerosene and jet kerosene products, as suppliers change the product classification of dual purpose kerosene before its sale for final consumption in either aviation or heating.
