Transformation outputs are less than the energy inputs due to the energy required to make the transformations, and losses from those processes. SEAI analyses the energy input to and elecricity output from transformation electricity generation activities by energy product and by the renewable/non-renewable split. Electricity produced from 'electricity exchange and transfers' are not included in this section. This information can be found on the 'Electricity' webpage in the 'by energy product' section. This page refers to electricity generated from:

  • Main activity producers
  • Autoproducer CHPs

Activities that add energy to energy available for final consumption (energy outputs) have been assigned positive values. Activities that remove energy from energy available for final consumption (energy inputs) have been assigned negative values.

The data view below shows the annual total energy input to transformation electricity generation, summed across the public thermal power plants (PTPP) input and combined heat and power plants (CHP) input streams (top), along with the absolute and percentage differences of input to transformation electricity generation, with respect to the previous year for up to 20 years, where data is available (bottom). Here, renewables exclude contributions from 'electricity exchange and transfers' (e.g. wind, solar PV etc.).

By Energy Product

The data view below shows the annual total energy input to transformation electricity generation, summed across the public thermal power plants (PTPP) input and combined heat and power plants (CHP) input streams (top), along with the energy product breakdown displayed as a percentage of the total energy input to transformation electricity generation in a given year (bottom). Here, renewables exclude contributions from 'electricity exchange and transfers' (e.g. wind, solar PV etc.).

Renewable/Non-Renewable Split

The data view below shows the annual total energy input to transformation electricity generation, summed across the public thermal power plants (PTPP) input and combined heat and power plants (CHP) input streams (top), along with the renewable/non-renewable breakdown displayed as a percentage of the total energy input to transformation electricity generation in a given year (bottom). Here, renewables exclude contributions from 'electricity exchange and transfers' (e.g. wind, solar PV etc.). This breakdown is also not the basis of the RES-E calculation and does not include weightings, for example.

Tailor the view to show either/both input and output values. Here, renewables exclude contributions from 'electricity exchange and transfers' (e.g. wind, solar PV etc.).

Combined Heat and Power Plants - by Energy Product

The data view below shows the annual energy product breakdown of the total energy input to and electricity output from combined heat and power plants (CHP) in a given year. Tailor the view to show either/both input and output values. Here, renewables exclude contributions from 'electricity exchange and transfers' (e.g. wind, solar PV etc.).

Using the Annual Data Views

The data views can be customised and navigated by:

  • Selecting the units from the dropdown menu - kilotonnes of oil equivalent (ktoe) (default), terajoules (TJ), or terawatt hours (TWh).
  • Hovering over an element of a view to display a tooltip providing numerical values.

The data in the views can be downloaded by clicking on the 'download icon' and selecting:

  • Image to download the view as a PNG file.
  • Data to open a table of the underlying data in Tableau Public Crosstab to download the underlying data as a XLSX file (Microsoft Excel) or a CSV file (comma-separated values).
  • PDF to download the view as a PDF.
  • PowerPoint to download the view as a PPTX file for Microsoft PowerPoint.
